Chalazion Treatment: Effective Solutions for Eyelid Cysts

A chalazion is a common eyelid condition caused by blockage of the Meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. When these glands become obstructed, a painless, firm swelling may develop on the eyelid.

At Özel Sistem Eye Medical Center, chalazion diagnosis and treatment are performed by our experienced ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery specialists using modern, patient-focused treatment approaches.

What is a Chalazion?

A chalazion is a benign cyst-like inflammation that develops due to blockage of the oil glands within the eyelid. Unlike a stye, a chalazion is usually not caused by an active bacterial infection and often presents as a painless lump that may gradually enlarge over time.

In some cases, large chalazia may apply pressure on the cornea and temporarily affect visual quality.

Chalazion vs. Stye: What is the Difference?

Although commonly confused, chalazion and stye are different conditions:

  • A stye is typically an acute bacterial infection associated with pain, redness, and tenderness.
  • A chalazion is usually a chronic inflammatory blockage that presents as a painless eyelid lump.

An untreated stye may occasionally evolve into a chalazion.

Common Symptoms of Chalazion

Symptoms may include:

  • Firm swelling on the eyelid
  • Mild eyelid tenderness
  • Localized redness or swelling
  • Cosmetic discomfort
  • Blurred vision in larger lesions

Risk Factors

Several factors may increase the risk of chalazion formation, including:

  • Chronic blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
  • Ocular rosacea
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Oily skin type
  • Poor eyelid hygiene
  • Recurrent styes

Chalazion Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the size, duration, and severity of the lesion.

Warm Compress & Eyelid Hygiene

Warm compresses and gentle eyelid massage may help improve gland drainage, especially in early-stage chalazia.

Medical Treatment

Antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops and ointments may be prescribed when inflammation or secondary infection is present.

Steroid Injection

In selected cases, intralesional steroid injection may help reduce inflammation and shrink the chalazion.

Chalazion Surgery (Excision)

If the chalazion persists despite conservative treatment, minor surgical removal may be recommended.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and usually takes only a few minutes. In most cases, the incision is made from the inner surface of the eyelid, minimizing visible scarring.

Patients can generally return to daily activities shortly after the procedure.

When Should You See an Ophthalmologist?

Professional evaluation is recommended if:

  • The swelling persists for several weeks
  • The lesion continues to enlarge
  • Vision becomes affected
  • Recurrent chalazia develop
  • Eyelash loss or unusual skin changes occur

At Özel Sistem Eye Medical Center, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and personalized treatment options for eyelid disorders using advanced ophthalmic care standards.
