YAG Laser (Capsulotomy, Iridotomy)
YAG Laser: Quick and Effective Treatment for Secondary Cataract and Glaucoma
YAG Laser is a safe and minimally invasive laser procedure commonly used in ophthalmology to treat secondary cataract and certain types of glaucoma. The treatment is performed without surgical incisions and usually takes only a few minutes. At Özel Sistem Eye Medical Center, YAG Laser procedures are performed using advanced laser technology for fast and comfortable treatment.
What is YAG Laser?
YAG Laser (Neodymium:YAG Laser) is a specialized ophthalmic laser that treats eye tissues using focused light energy. It is most commonly used for:
- Posterior capsule opacification (secondary cataract)
- Narrow-angle glaucoma treatment and prevention
YAG Laser for Secondary Cataract
Some patients may experience blurred vision months or years after cataract surgery due to posterior capsule opacification. YAG Laser capsulotomy creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again. Vision usually improves rapidly after the procedure.
YAG Laser for Glaucoma (Iridotomy)
Laser iridotomy creates a tiny opening in the iris to improve fluid circulation inside the eye and reduce the risk of angle-closure glaucoma pressure buildup.
How is the Procedure Performed?
YAG Laser treatment is performed in an outpatient setting. Eye drops are applied to dilate or constrict the pupil. The patient sits at the laser device, and the ophthalmologist delivers short laser pulses. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and is completely painless.
Recovery After YAG Laser
Patients can usually return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment. Temporary blurred vision or light sensitivity may occur for a few hours. Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops for several days after treatment.
Possible Risks and Side Effects
- Temporary increase in intraocular pressure

- Floaters
- Rare retinal complications, especially in high myopia patients
- Very rare damage to the intraocular lens
