What is Intravitreal Injection?

Intravitreal injection is a minimally invasive procedure in which medication is injected into the vitreous cavity through the sclera using a very fine needle.

The most commonly used medications are:

• Anti-VEGF agents

• Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

How is the Procedure Performed?

Anesthetic eye drops are applied to numb the eye. The eye and surrounding area are carefully disinfected. Using a micro-needle, the medication is injected into the vitreous cavity. Most patients feel little or no pain.

Treatment Process and Follow-Up

Many patients require:

• Initial monthly loading doses
• Regular retinal examinations
• OCT monitoring
• Repeat injections depending on retinal response

Recovery After Injection

Temporary blurred vision, mild irritation, or floaters may occur and usually improve within a short time.

• Avoid rubbing the eye
• Keep the eye clean and dry for several days
• Use prescribed eye drops regularly

• Temporary subconjunctival hemorrhage
• Temporary increase in intraocular pressure
• Intraocular infection (endophthalmitis) — rare
• Cataract progression
• Retinal detachment — rare
