Intravitreal Injection Therapy: Advanced Treatment for Retinal Diseases

Intravitreal injection therapy is one of the most effective treatment methods used in modern ophthalmology for retinal diseases that may lead to vision loss. At Özel Sistem Eye Medical Center, intravitreal injections are performed under sterile conditions using up-to-date treatment protocols.

What is Intravitreal Injection?

Intravitreal injection is a minimally invasive procedure in which medication is injected into the vitreous cavity through the sclera using a very fine needle.

The most commonly used medications are:

  • Anti-VEGF agents
  • Steroid-based medications

Conditions Treated with Intravitreal Injection

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema
  • Retinal vein occlusions
  • Uveitis-related macular edema
  • Choroidal neovascularization
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in selected cases

How is the Procedure Performed?

Anesthetic eye drops are applied to numb the eye. The eye and surrounding area are carefully disinfected. Using a micro-needle, the medication is injected into the vitreous cavity. Most patients feel little or no pain.

Treatment Process and Follow-Up

Many patients require:

  • Initial monthly loading doses
  • Regular retinal examinations
  • OCT monitoring
  • Repeat injections depending on retinal response

Recovery After Injection

Temporary blurred vision, mild irritation, or floaters may occur and usually improve within a short time.

  • Avoid rubbing the eye
  • Keep the eye clean and dry for several days
  • Use prescribed eye drops regularly

Possible Risks and Side Effects

  • Temporary subconjunctival hemorrhage
  • Temporary increase in intraocular pressure
  • Intraocular infection (endophthalmitis) — rare
  • Cataract progression
  • Retinal detachment — rare
